UN plans lottery to fight against children’s hunger

United Nations is planning a world lottery to collect about 500 million dollars per year, in order to fight against the extreme hunger that is threatening the life of 146 little children in the poorest African, Asian and Latin American countries

The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) wants to sell €1 lottery tickets, starting in Europe next year. France and Spain have acceded to sell the tickets, according to Cecile Sportis, director of WFP.

Televisa to open 10 bingo rooms in Mexico

The giant Mexican media company Televisa is planning to open 10 bingo rooms and houses of bets in 2006, investing 4.5 million dollars per establishment, according to Alfonso de Angoitia, vice president of the firm.

Grupo Televisa announced last year the creation of Apuestas Internacionales (international bets), in order to start its operations in this rapidly growing market, which is currently led by the companies Caliente and CIE.

Exemption for bingo halls rejected

The Major of Georgetown, Kentucky, voted against the possibility of smoking at bingo halls. The American Legion Post 24, that sponsors a charitable bingo in the city, had argued that their profits had decreased since the smoking prohibition was in force.
Members of the organization claimed that benefits for charitable purposes prevailed over the hazards of secondhand smoke. Public health representatives said that an exemption, even for a good cause, would make the smoking ban weaker. The Mayor agreed.

Arkansas voters to decide charity bingo issue

House Joint Resolution 1003 of year 2005 contains a proposal to amend the constitution of Arkansas and allow charitable associations to conduct bingo games and ruffles. If voters approved the amendment, it would become effective on 1 January 2007.

Nonprofit religious, educational, service, medical, veterans, fraternal, civic, volunteer fire, volunteer rescue and volunteer police organizations would be allowed to carry out bingo and ruffles by the amendment.
