Women gear up for gaming invasion

Women are about to invade the male dominated gaming world, a games conference in Scotland is to be told.

Games consultant Ernest Adams will say the stage is set for an explosion of women gamers, especially in the area of massively-multi-player online gaming.

There needs to be a sea-change in the industry, with more female developers and more games for women, he believes.

It’s still five months away, but already Microsoft is suggesting that it might not have enough Xbox 360’s to go around for a worldwide release as promised.

In an interview with MCV magazine, a trade gaming paper, UK Xbox boss Neil Thompson said that the problems where going to be sheer worldwide demand rather than stock problems on Microsoft’s side.

"We feel as a company we've done the groundwork to get to a point where we can do the global release; we feel we're going to deliver and have a great Xmas.

A Shanghai online gamer has been given a suspended death sentence for killing a fellow gamer.

Qui Chengwei stabbed Zhu Caoyuan in the chest when he found out he had sold his virtual sword for 7,200 Yuan (£473).

The sword, which Mr Qui had lent to Mr Zhu, was won in the popular online game Legend of Mir 3.

Attempts to take the dispute to the police failed because there is currently no law in China to protect virtual property.

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - An owner of two Kentucky theaters is making a political statement by refusing to show the Jennifer Lopez-Jane Fonda comedy "Monster-in-Law."

Ike Boutwell, who served as a pilot during the Vietnam War, has taken a stand against Fonda, who took an activist role during the war. Outside the Elizabethtown Movie Palace, he displayed the infamous picture of the actress posing happily with a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft crew, while his Showtime Cinemas marquee reads: "No Jane Fonda movie in this theater."

"I think when people do something, they need to be held responsible for their actions," Boutwell tells the AP. "When you give the enemy aid, it makes the war last longer."

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – As reported by the Myrtle Beach Sun News: "The two casino boats in Little River will have five years to phase out their business if Horry County bans them, according to a revised version of the boat bill passed Wednesday by the Senate.

"The bill, also passed by the House, delegates the state's authority to ban casino boats to the local governments, which may choose to ban them or regulate and tax them.

"The boats are legal under federal law unless the state bans them. The two in Little River currently are the only ones operating in the state.

"Attempts to pass a ban have been unsuccessful because of opposition from Charleston legislators who fear it would block cruise ships, most of which include gambling rooms.

Arkansas faces a single constitutional problem worthy of the voters’ ministrations, if you can believe the legislature. It is the prospect that Prosecuting Attorney Larry Jegley will raid a parish hall and arrest a priest and his parishioners for practicing bingo or engaging in a raffle.

A joint legislative committee wrestled with a raft of constitutional resolutions for 90 days, but the lawmakers could agree on only one to refer to voters in 2006. It would allow nonprofit organizations to have bingo and raffles provided that the money will not be used to compensate anyone affiliated with the organizations.

Hilda Schmidt, 96, likes to play bingo with a card she thinks is lucky -- it's the one with a 66 in the bottom right corner.

When O-66 is called, the Sand Rock Ridge Care and Rehab resident drawls out the number, lightheartedly calling it siggety-six. Later, when B-4 is called, she quips, "Before or behind."

It's just another day of playing bingo for a half-dozen residents at the nursing home, but skip a day, and they'll let you know about it, Activities Director Sheryl Searcy said.
