DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) - When Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected pope, he was hardly the only winner. Thousands worldwide placed bets on him through the Web - and an inspired few hundred even correctly guessed he'd take the name Benedict.

Among a handful of Internet-based bookmakers who offered odds on the next pope, the biggest player was Paddy Power PLC, the No. 1 bookie in Ireland, which has taken bets on John Paul's successor for the past five years.

This Company already has vast experience in the Gambling area. But with the cooperation of this new partner, they would be completely advocated in developing, setting in motion, and keeping updated the sites they would create. In the first stage of the project, they are thinking of launching almost 10 sites in different languages (German, Spanish, French, Italian and English) and with diverse categories like poker, slot machines, bingo, backgammon, etc.

Bingo News - Pope's successor

36.jpg

"Due to the importance of the events happened in the recently hours in relation to the death of the Pope, we think that it is important to maintain it informed, in spite of not being the news related to gambling."

As the world mourns the passing of Pope John Paul II, public discussion inevitably moves to the discussion of the choice of his successor. And everyone agrees his will be a tough act to follow. No one, it seems, can hope to match Karol Joseph Wojtyla's charisma and stamina.

The new pope will have to have strong communications skills, like his predecessor, whose 26-year papacy was one of the longest and most influential in church history.

He will have to have strong language skills to be able to connect with the widest possible audience -- and to speak out effectively against the persecution of Christians and other world injustices.

Grandma's Bingos !

If the word "bingo" brings to mind a vision of senior citizens playing a wholesome game to win small tokens from the $0.99 store, Bingolicious may have surprised you. The event took place in the Eddie Layton Student Union last Tuesday night and included "old ladies" dressed in drag, but the comparisons to traditional bingo end there.

Sponsored by the Stonewall Coalition, an organization aimed at promoting peace and tolerance, the goal of Bingolicious was to garner support for the Ali Forney Center, a place for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth who have been abandoned by their families.

Bingolicious featured drag queens, Lavita Co-op, Sweety, Flawless Sabrina, Rose Royale, and Stonewall's own, Trandy. The newly renovated Student Union was decorated with a large arch made out of multi-colored balloons. Hosting drag queen Sweety commented on the display, comparing it to a gay prom, saying how much she wanted to see couple standing underneath it.

Some children as young as 11 have been turning to state experts for help in dealing with their gambling problems.

Chris Armentano, director of the Problem Gambling Services for the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, said 11 children under the age of 18 are enrolled in the state's treatment programs for gambling problems.

Armentano attributes the situation to the growing popularity of poker. He also has concerns about the growing use of Internet gambling sites.
